Athirapally Waterfalls

Athirapally Waterfalls is around 75 kilometers from Kochi. This is one of the best waterfalls in India and one of the most famous tourist places in Kerala. Athirapally has now become one of the popular weekend getaways from Kochi, Coimbatore & Munnar. At Athirapally water falls from a height of more than 80 feet through several parallel streams. In monsoon, the water flow gets strength and all the streams join together and appear like Niagara Falls. The real beauty comes alive just after Monsson so if you visit this place in September – November you can experience mesmerizing beauty.

Personal Experience

I visited Athirapally waterfalls in November with my wife. We started our journey from Mumbai. We got down to Ernakulam railway station in the evening and then with our pre-booked cab started our journey to Athirapally. Though the distance is around 65 kilometers from the railway station, it took around 3 hours for us to reach our resort due to road conditions at that time. I hope that must have improved now. We stayed at Bethania Resort. After having the delicious meal, we decided to take rest to prepare our self for the morning visit to Athirapally Waterfalls.

After having our breakfast (Upma, idli and wada) we left the hotel for Athirapally waterfall. The road from our hotel to Athirapally Waterfall was surrounded by lush greenery.

After reaching the entrance, it took us 10 minutes walk to reach the waterfall. From the entrance, you will actually land on top of the waterfall, from where you can witness scenic beauty of the Sholayar hills and a unique view of the waterfall. People were enjoying the water stream. We were trying to figure out how to get to the bottom of the waterfall. Finally, we found the way and after trekking down for around 15 – 20 minutes we were right in front of Waterfall. We sat there for around 30 minutes just watching the waterfall and listening to the sound of the waterfall. The feeling was awesome.

After capturing the memories in heart and camera we headed towards our next destination Vazhachal Waterfalls, as we had to reach Munnar on the same day after sightseeing.
